Technology advances in the design of buildings and the materials used in building contribute to the sustainability of the building but also to the industry. The more functional the building the more economically as well as environmentally sustainable the building the longer the building will be in use.

Every Cow House Construction building we construct is designed to have no negative impact on the environment. Cow House Construction places huge importance on sustainable farming in particular reference to the environment when discussing any new project with clients, as ‘cow housing’ is one way in which the negatively talked about dairy industry can redeem itself.

The deteriorating water quality in the intensively farmed areas of the South Island has to be managed and then reversed so that the farming sector can be sustainable. Our cow housing is designed in such a way that no water is required to operate the scraper systems, of which travel continuously along the walking lanes removing effluent to a central effluent drain as a thick sludge. This sludge is then stored for extended periods in specially designed holding ponds, ready to be applied to the land during summer months or when there is minimal opportunity for runoff and maximising the nutrients extracted from the effluent so this can be used as fertiliser as opposed to having to buy in these additional nutrients.

Our system is all about taking control of the farms many variables and managing it in a way that is environmentally sustainable, whilst having the highest level of animal welfare, maximum production gains, efficient use of feed and ultimately increased farm profitability.
